Raleigh - Edgar Ed Ellsworth Thacker, III, age 66, passed away on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at his home in Raleigh surrounded by his family. Born September 29, 1944 in Bluefield, WV he was the son of the late Edgar Ellsworth Thacker, Jr. and Mary Jane Thacker. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Kincaid Thacker; daughter Brittany Thacker; sister Jane Thacker Costa and husband Lee of Durham, NC; nieces Katherine Costa Goldfaden, her husband Andrew of Raleigh and Emily Costa of Bamberg, Germany; brother Steve and wife Kim; nephews Taylor and Andrew of Richmond, VA. He is preceded in death by his brother, Fred Thacker.A graduate of the West Virginia University, he was an avid Mountaineer fan and a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. After college, he answered the call of his country and volunteered for active duty in the Vietnam conflict. After serving as 1st Lieutenant in the Army 1542 Infantry Unit, he returned to West Virginia to begin his lifetime career in sales.Ed was an active member of St. Michaels Episcopal Church of Raleigh, Rotary of Crabtree, West Virginia Alumna Association, Habitat for Humanity and St. Michaels Church Kitchen Ministry. He was a devoted participant in many business networks, including Business Networking International and various chambers of commerce. When he was not volunteering in the community or networking with other business people, Ed could be found on the golf course or on the beach at Ocean Isle. A funeral service will be held Thursday, February 24, 2011 at St. Michaels Episcopal Church in Raleigh at 2:00 pm. The family will receive visitors after the service in the Fellowship Hall.The family would like to thank Dr. Kenneth Zeitler and his staff for his unfailing kindness.
