James Philip Stone

Mr. Stone died January 30, 2021. He was born October 20, 1924 in Ashland, Virginia to Philip Thomas and Alice Stephens Stone. Known as Philip or Phil to his friends and family, he grew up in Raleigh and graduated from Hugh Morson High School. After serving three years in the Army Air Corp during World War II, he attended and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1950. While at the University, Mr. Stone met and married Viola Griffis of Willow Spring, NC. After graduation from UNC, Mr. Stone joined Carolina Power and Light Company (now Duke Energy) until his retirement in 1988. After retirement, he became a Senior Associate with the consulting firm of Bensinger, Dupont and Associates of Chicago Ill. Mr. Stone served as a member of many civic and industry organizations including the Raleigh Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce. He was an active member of the American Management Association, the Society for Engineering Education, and the Edison Electric Institute. He served as Course Director and Chairman of the EEI Graduate Management Program and lecturer at the Southeastern Electric Exchange Public Utility Executive Course. He served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of Residents in Long Term Care in Raleigh, and was a member of the Southern College Placement Association. He was an Eagle Scout and a Veteran Scouter. Among his life goals was to spend time in each of the fifty states of our country. He not only realized that goal but traveled in more than 33 other countries on six of the earth’s continents. Among his favorites were a trip to Holland with his son, Charles, and trips throughout the world with grandchildren. As a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church for over eighty years, he served as financial controller for over twenty years and on multiple committees. He was honored to chair the committees that led to the relocation and building of the present church facilities. He now holds Deacon Emeritus status. Mr. Stone was very proud of his loving and close family. He was predeceased by his wife of forty six years and a son, David Philip, at age two. He is survived by four sons, Thomas L. and wife, Diane of Gibsonville, NC, James R. and wife, Cynthia of Spartanburg, SC, Charles L. and wife, Mary of Montgomeryville, PA, Gregory P. and wife, Kimberly of Charlotte, NC and a daughter, Barbara E. and husband, David Inscore of Willow Spring, NC. Also, surviving are twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
