December 3, 1916 - August 7, 2011 Reverend Albert George Edwards passed away at his home on Sunday, August 7, 2011. Born in Canada to Annabella Donald and William F. Edwards, he was raised by his grandparents in Scotland. He came to the United States to further his education. He began his studies at Georgia Tech and graduated from Presbyterian College. He obtained his Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary. Albert began his ministry at Orange Presbyterian Church in Orange, Virginia. During this time he was Chaplain to Woodberry Forest School. He then spent several years as Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg, Virginia. In 1958, he was called to serve as Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh. While he was actively involved in his Pastorate, he served as Chaplain to the North Carolina House of Representatives. During his ministry at FPC, he established The Friendship Fund, The Clothes Closet, and The Bicycle Fund to serve those less fortunate. During his ministry Sunday services were televised on WRAL. He attracted many loyal followers through his popular Early Birds Ministry at FPC and Morning Prayer Service at the Alexander Family YMCA. Albert was a member of the Peace College Board of Trustees, The Salvation Army Board of Directors, and the Raleigh Housing Authority. Albert was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Margaret Early Edwards, his son, William Cameron Edwards, and his parents and two sisters. He is survived by his daughters, Susan Edwards Waddell and Barbara Edwards Hayes of Raleigh. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jonathan Lee Waddell of Remington, Virginia, William Early Hayes, and his wife, Alston, Martha Susan Hayes, and Allison Margaret Hayes, all of Raleigh. Additionally, he is survived by his great-grandchildren, Wilson Edwards Hayes and Dorothy Macon Hayes. The Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 2pm on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. A private interment service will be held on Friday, August 12, 2011 at CedarGroveCemetery in Bealeton, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the William C. Edwards Memorial Scholarship fund at First Presbyterian Church, 120 W. Hargett Street, Raleigh, 27601 or to the Alexander Family YMCA, 1603 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh27605.
