Alfred Michael Almaguer, Jr., Al aka Big Al, age 75 of Garner, NC died Sunday, August 20, 2023 in his home surrounded by his family after a long battle with heart disease and diabetes. He was born October 22, 1947 to the late Alfred and Charletta Almaguer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Almaguer-Burmaster and his nephew, Tom Riskowski.
He is survived by his wife, Paula Almaguer of 52 years; his daughter, Celeste Tarbell, husband Jason Tarbell and grandchildren Matthew, Maegan, Madison; his son, Aaron Almaguer, wife Katie Almaguer and grandchildren Carter, Grant and his sister, Elizabeth Freeman Husband Arnie
Al was born in Fairbury, Nebraska and enlisted in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was awarded 2 purple hearts during his 2 tours. After returning home and settling down with Paula in Kearney, Nebraska, Al joined the Volunteer Fire department. Al was a proud member of his community in both Nebraska and North Carolina and throughout the years gave generously of his time serving in the American Legion, Elks, VFW, Masons and Shriners. Al spent his remaining years after his retirement from Raleigh Office Supply, being a doting grandpa, aka Papa. This was by far his most rewarding job and he cherished his grandchildren more than anything.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorial contributions be made to either the Shriner's Children Hospital or the Wounded Warrior Project.
