RALEIGH, N.C. – Algon George Grange, 101, formerly of Jamaica, passed away on Friday, September 29, 2023, surrounded by his loving family at Universal Healthcare in Raleigh.
He was born in Blackstonedge, St. Ann, Jamaica on April 3, 1922, the son of the late George “Blazer” Grange and Doris “Granny” Dougal. Algon Grange graduated from Dinthill Training Center in 1941. Mr. Grange was amongst the first batch of boys to enter the institution established in 1938 which was one of his most precious memories. Upon graduation, Mr. Grange was awarded “One black Aberdeen Angus cow.” Mr. Grange immigrated to the United States in the 1970s. While living in the United States, he established the Hartford Chapter of the Jamaica Progressive League, Inc., of which he was the President for many years. He received the Ethelrel Brown Award for his outstanding achievements and dedicated service. After Mr. Grange retired, he returned to Jamaica to pursue his dream as a Farmer and was recognized by the Rural Agricultural Development Authority for his contribution to the development of the Agricultural sector. Mr. Grange is also known for his great story telling and words of wisdom. His presence was an inspiration to everyone who he knew, and his legacy will continue forever.
In addition to his parents, Algon was preceded in death by his son, Everton Grange; sisters, Daphne Barnes, Violet Harrison, Gloria Grange, Mavis Grange; and brothers, Joseph Grange, Derrick Grange, Noel Grange, Desmond Hyatt, Kenneth Hyatt, Dennis Grange, Valentine Grange, and Lester Grange.
Affectionately known as “The General” to his family, Algon is survived by his wife, Monica Grange of CT; daughters, Allison Grange Thompson (husband, Ian) of NC, and Karlene Tyghter of FL; sons, Howard Grange of CT, Alton Grange of CT, Duckworth Grange of FL, Alden Grange (wife, Yolanda) of DE; daughters-in-law, Jean Grange of CT and Crystal Grange of NC; a niece whom he considered as his own daughter, The Honourable Olivia “Babsy” Grange, OJ, CD, MP of Jamaica; brothers, Alphonso Grange (wife, Norma) of PA, Louis Grange (wife, Pamela) of Jamaica; grandchildren, Kahywanda (husband, Vaughn), Tamieka (husband, Kelly), Diego, Brandie, Pilar, Matthew, Emmanuelle, Passyon, Alicia, Corderius, Delicia, Brandon, Kriston, Stetson, Alton “A.J.” Jr., Cindy, Tammy, Cortni, Jóvon, Alexis, Summer (husband, Sam), Alden, Jr., Shayla, Michael, Jabreeah, Josiah, Alyssa, Mark, and Astaja; and his great grandchildren, Kysiah, Kaelynn, Kyla, Kaijhan, Keon, Xyanne, Isaiah, Kelsie, Everton, Diego Jr., Ethan, Mason, Audriana, Novalee, Lachelle, Chassidy, Alton “Trey” III, Dahlia, Aubrey, Lennox, Adriana, Angelo, Jameson, Cobi, Chole, Nevah, Kensley, Avery, Christopher, Malachi, Malayah, Josiah Thomas “JT,” and two more on the way; along with a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Funeral services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dinthill High School in Jamaica.
