FUQUAY-VARINA– Allen “Max” Matthews, 86, of Fuquay-Varina died peacefully on Monday at Bradley Creek Health Center in Wilmington, NC. A native of Harnett County, he is the son of the late Haywood Allen and Inez Currin Matthews. Max attended Louisburg College and graduated from Campbell College in 1954. He owned and operated Club Car Sales and Service golf cart company in Fuquay-Varina. He enjoyed playing golf “8 days a week” and watching sports on TV, especially basketball. He is survived by his son, Allen (Al) Max Matthews, Jr. (Jeanene) of Wilmington; daughters, Metra Ashworth (Edward) of Wilmington, Marsha Santiago (David) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; sister, Larue Goodman of Dunn; grandchildren, Jacqueline Matthews Jones (Allen), Brittany Matthews Atkins (Ryan), Max Ashworth III (Heather), Claire Ashworth, Gabriela Santiago; great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Hudson Atkins, Ward and Parham Ashworth. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Alice Adams Matthews; second wife, Joann Eason McGee; and sister, Larelle Livermore. The family is most thankful for the respect and care he was given the last 2 years by the staff at Bradley Creek Health Center in Wilmington, NC. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11:00 am at Wake Chapel Memorial Gardens in Fuquay-Varina.
