Alva Wallace Culpepper, 91, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2024. She was born in Nash County on November 10, 1932 to the late Claude and Alice Wallace. She grew up in Rocky Mount, where she met the love of her life. She said “for me, it was love at first sight.” After finishing high school, she worked in Washington DC for the F.B.I. She then went to Mars Hill College for two years. She married Vernon shortly after that. Their daughter Julie was born on their first anniversary. Clay was born a few years later. Alva returned to UNC Chapel Hill part time and eventually gained a degree in Speech Therapy from UNC Greensboro. She worked in the Wake County school system as a speech therapist. She said it is important as to how you are remembered. “I’d like to be remembered as a gentle witness to the love of a loving Heavenly Father and the joy and peace it brings.”
Alva is survived by daughter, Julie C. Harp (Glenn) of Cassatt, SC; son, V. Clay Culpepper (Diane) of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Glenn Harp (Danielle), Geremy Harp (Brooke), Nicholas Culpepper (Rachel); great grandchildren, Claire, Wyatt, Dilon, Cam Ellie, Aiden, Charlotte, and Ava.
In addition to her parents, Alva is preceded in death by her husband, Vernon; sisters, Valeria Peed and Wilhelmina Bracey.
Her visitation will be held Friday, September 6, 2024 from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm in the New Hope Baptist Church, 4301 Louisburg Road, Raleigh, NC.
Her memorial service will be held Friday, September 6, 2024 at 1:00 pm in the New Hope Baptist Church.
