Amanda Harrell Wheless, 90, died Monday night, November 10, 2014. She was born on November 22, 1923, in Powellsville, NC. She is the daughter of Amanda Mizell Harrell and Demetrius Silas “Met” Harrell. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Nanda Wheless Irons, her two granddaughters, Amanda “Mandy” Irons Wilson, and husband Matt, of Raleigh; Erin Irons McNeill, and husband Jay, of Charleston, SC; and great grandson Samuel Irons Wilson. Also surviving are her nieces, Jennifer Hoggard Sehon and family, Charlotte Hoggard James and family, and C.D Hoggard of Powellsville, NC, their father. She is preceded in death by her only sister, Annie Harrell Hoggard. Amanda graduated from Powellsville High School and then attended Campbell College, Buies Creek, NC, where she took a business course during WWII, 1941-1942. She then worked in Ahoskie and later moved to Raleigh where she worked for several attorneys and finished her career at NCSU, retiring in 1989. She loved spending time with her family, especially her new great grandson “Sammy”. She was a devoted member of Forest Hills Baptist Church for over 55 years, where she enjoyed attending the Victory Bible class, singing in the Cornerstone Senior Choir and volunteering in the front office. She loved her friends at Forest Hills and considered them to be her extended family. Her family wishes to thank the staff at Independence Village and also at Hospice House of Raleigh for their gentle and loving care during her last months and days of declining health. The funeral will be held at Forest Hills Baptist Church on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at 2:00PM. Visitation will be held in the “gathering place” at Forest Hills an hour prior to the ceremony. She will be laid to rest at Raleigh Memorial Park.
