Anne Cates Garner

April 30, 1953 — July 11, 2024

Anne Cates Garner, 71, died Thursday, July 11, 2024, at her home in Garner. She was born in Wake County and was the daughter of the late George W. Cates and Lois F. Cates. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister.

Anne was born and raised in Raleigh and graduated from Broughton High School in 1971. She moved to Garner shortly after being married and lived there her entire life. Initially a homemaker, she worked her whole career in insurance, most of it at MCM Occidental Wilshire. Anne loved to swim, especially at the beach, and was a voracious reader. She loved to watch sports, with her favorites being the Durham Bulls and college basketball. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren watching movies, feeding ducks, and visiting Pullen Park. She was best known for being an avid baker, making homemade brownies and red velvet cakes.

She loved animals, especially cats and dogs. She would own both her whole life. She quickly fed or rescued a stray animal no matter the circumstances.

Surviving are her children, Yvette G. Eason (Richard) and Donald G. Garner, Jr. (Sloan); grandchildren, R. Blake Eason (Katie A. Maddox), Brittany E. Young (Phillip), Matthew J. Eason (Jana), and Tyler C. Garner; great-grandchildren, Jordan A. Ellis, Turner C. Eason, and Kensington L. Young; sisters, Joan S. Cates and Nancy L. Cates.

There will be a private family gathering only.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the American Heart Association or the SPCA of Wake County.
