Arthelia Whitley

Arthelia Whitley, born June 18, 1925 to the late Owen R. and Lessie Wall Whitley, died on Thursday, January 7, 2016, at Independence Village of Olde Raleigh, her residence for the past year. Funeral Service will be 2:00 pm Monday, January 11, 2016, at Samaria Baptist Church 3621 Poole Road, Raleigh, NC 27610 with burial to follow at Montlawn Memorial Park. She is survived by daughters, Deborah W. Gay and husband Mike, of Raleigh and Sibyl Whitley of Charlotte; grandchildren, Christen Gilbert, Drew Bowers and Michael Gay, Jr., and wife Dana; great granddaughter, Natalie Gilbert; brothers, Dwight Whitley and Ervin Whitley of Knightdale, Billy Whitley of Greensboro; sisters, Thera Chapin of California, Carolyn Shropshire of Raleigh and Sandra Massey of Knightdale. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, James B. Whitley; infant daughter, Jane Arthelia; brothers, Robert Whitley and Lawrence Whitley; sisters, Margaret Oglesby and Velma Snipes. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Samaria Baptist Church.
