Ava Lee Overton

Raleigh- Ava Lee Goodwin Overton, 87, daughter of Eunice Goodwin Preslar and Daylon Goodwin, went home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 26, 2015. Ava was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Aaron Chaucley (A.C.) Overton, Jr., who was a well-known banjo picker. Ava and A.C. opened their home to anyone who wanted to play music or just enjoy good Christian fellowship and food. “Miss Ava,” who was born in Chatham County on May 12, 1928, was a beloved Sunday School teacher of four to six-year-old children for 19 years. She loved Jesus and His Word and believed in “taking the name of Jesus with you wherever you go.” She will be remembered as a humble and giving servant who always put God and “others” first. She has baked thousands of cakes and cooked for many families who were either sick or needed encouragement. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 30 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 6020 Rock Quarry Road, Raleigh, NC 27610. Burial will be at McLaurin at Pinecrest Memorial Park, U.S. 70 West in Clayton. Surviving family members include: daughter, Glenda Overton Montague and her husband, Bert; son, Gerry Overton and his wife, Sharron; grandchildren, Sarah Montague Dodson and her husband Chris, Joshua Montague, Erin Overton, and Hannah Overton; great grandchildren, Caleb and Caitlin Dodson. Ava was also preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Lucille Barbee, Willodeen Moore, Lola Masters, Myrtle Wall; and a brother, Herman Goodwin. The family will receive relatives and friends from 6:00-8:00 on Thursday evening at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 1200 Benson Road, Garner, NC 27529. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
