Avis Virginia Hendrickson

May 28, 1925 - August 29, 2011 RALEIGH - Avis Virginia Hendrickson, 87, passed away Monday, August 29th of natural causes. A native of Onslow County, she was born to the late Lester and Sally Maie Melton Wood. She was raised in New Bern and later moved to Raleigh, where she spent most of her life. She managed her home with her husband and three sons, which was a labor of love for her. Her favorite things were cooking southern food for her family, socializing with and caring for others, playing games, and reading. Her survivors include her sons, Earl Hicks, of Greenbelt, MD, Michael Hicks, of El Cajun, CA, and Roy Hicks, of Edgewater, MD; grandchildren, Roy J., Chris, Jason, and Tommy Hicks, Christina Draper, Ali Gast, and Tiffany Miller; seven great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; a sister, Alma LaPlante; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Friday, September 2, 2011, at 11:00 am in the Bryan-Lee Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Raleigh National Cemetery. Family will receive friends Thursday 6-8:00 pm at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner. The family welcomes donations in her name, in Lieu of flowers to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
