ANGIER- Babette Babs Sue Smith, 55, died Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Hospice of Wake County in Raleigh, NC due to complications from pancreatic cancer. Babs was born on October 3, 1956 in Toledo, Ohio the daughter of Peter Walford Nelson II and Selma Delores Dorie Benson. She graduated from Mason City Senior High School, class of 74. She married Wallace Wally Evan Smith in Mason City on December 14, 1974. The couple resided in St Paul, MN where they gave birth to their three girls. They moved to the Raleigh, NC area in October 1982 where they currently reside. Babs earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration August 31, 2003 from Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. Babs was a Distribution Supervisor for the Child Support Division of NCDHHS in Raleigh, NC. Prior to this she held positions at Underwriters Laboratories in Research Triangle Park, NC and as a Nanny in St. Paul, MN. She was a known as a leader who promoted harmony and teamwork in the workplace while inspiring confidence and respect among her peers. She took pride in her work showing a high level of honesty, loyalty, and integrity. She was warm, sincere, and genuine in her relationship to others while being stable, patient, and steady in her interactions. She displayed a strong sense of purpose while setting compelling personal goals. Always extremely reliable and supportive, she conveyed a positive personal image showing respect for everyone she came into contact with. Babs enjoyed crocheting afghans for her grandchildren, and traveling abroad and the US on their motorcycle. She found rest and relaxation while cruising the back roads in her Z4 with the top down and the wind blowing her hair, and camping with family. She was content just being with family, friends, and especially her grandchildren. Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 38 years, Wally; her daughters, Heather Michelle Bunting and husband, William, Amanda Rennea Good and husband, Andrew, Kellie Elysha Cooper and husband, David; grandchildren, James and Evan Bunting, Phiona and Lucie Good, and Mason and Emma Cooper; mother, Dorie; her sister, Brenda Good and husband, Dr. Robert Good; and sister-in-law, Carol Nelson. Babs was preceded in death by her father and brother, Peter Walford Nelson, III. Those that knew her well cared deeply for her and she will be missed. Funeral Service will be held Monday, July 2, 2012 at 6:00 PM in the Bryan-Lee Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Susan Hobbs of Garner United Methodist Church presiding. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Sunday, July 1, 2012 at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.
