Barbara Ann Johnson

July 23, 1938 — November 10, 2023

GARNER– Barbara Ann Johnson, 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on, November 10, 2023. A native of Johnston County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Colon Wallace and Virginia Caroline Wallace. Barbara was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her faith and belief in the Lord was inspiring and shined brightly in all that she did.

In addition to her parents, Barbara is preceded in death by her first husband, Roy E. Byrd; second husband, J. Kenneth Johnson; and sister, Judy Blackmon.

Barbara grew up in the heart of Four Oaks, where she met and married Roy Byrd. Their marriage brought into the world three cherished children who were the center of Barbara's life. After Roy's passing, Barbara reconnected from her past and married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth Johnson. Their love story was a testament to the enduring power of connection.

Throughout her working years, Barbara was a dedicated employee at Peden Steel in Raleigh. Even in retirement, Barbara remained active, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Her kitchen was a haven for anyone who was sick, shut in, or returning home from the hospital. Her delicious ham and biscuits were a staple at Easter sunrise services, bringing joy and warmth to many.

Barbara's generosity extended beyond her culinary skills. She was a tireless volunteer, driving folks to doctor appointments, haircuts, or anywhere they needed to go. Her compassion was a beacon of light in the lives of those around her. Barbara's faith was the cornerstone of her existence. For over 40 years, she dedicated her time to teaching Sunday school at New Bethel Baptist Church and Vandora Springs Church. Even during her stay at Bellarose Nursing & Rehab, she continued sharing her faith, bringing joy and comfort to those she encountered.

Barbara's love for adventure took her on many road trips across the country, always avoiding flying or long bridges, which didn't quite suit her fancy. At home, she found solace in reading and word searches, activities that brought her peace and enjoyment. Barbara was a woman of remarkable strength, kindness, and unwavering faith. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her family, friends, and countless individuals whose lives she touched. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will forever be cherished.

Barbara is survived by her sons, Tony Byrd (Randy), and Keith Byrd (Denise); daughter, Kim Jackson (Billy); sisters, Jean Byrd of Benson, and Peggy Smith of Four Oaks; grandchildren, Nikki Hefner (Josh), Ashely Shaw (Andrew), Ryan Jackson (Mandy), Mitchell Byrd (Jordan), and Nathan Byrd (Brittany); great grandchildren, Noah, Logan, Lily, Grace, Hunter, Aubury, Amelia, Avery, Libby, Natalie, Lucy, and by her soon to be born great grandchild who is expected to arrive in April; and stepdaughters, Mona Johnson Hudson of Florida, and Lynne Johnson Lockard of Maryland.
