Barbara Matthews

Barbara Burnette Matthews, 93, passed away on Monday March 31, 2025. She was born in Franklin County, NC to the late Horton and Etta Burnette of Castalia, NC. Services will be held at Bryan Lee Funeral Home, 1200 Benson Road, Garner, NC 27529, on Saturday, 5th of April, 2025, at 11:00 am. Family will receive friends there on Saturday, 5th of April at 10:00 am. Interment will be at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh Monday, 7th of April at 10:00 am.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband Kay Matthews and brother Herbert Burnette. She is survived by her daughter Cathy Stevens (Mike Capps), son Tommy Matthews, grandsons Chris McLamb and Jonathan McLamb (Candice), great granddaughter Avery McLamb, great grandsons Jacob, Bryce and Colin McLamb; and by her brother Wade Burnette (Susan) and sister Lillie Granger.

Mrs. Matthews was an active member of Fellowship Baptist church, Garner, NC and later of Triangle Baptist Church, Raleigh, NC. As God's servant, she lovingly performed many duties at each church including serving as church clerk and Sunday School teacher. At Triangle Baptist she served as deacon and assisted in organizing the church library.

Mrs. Matthews retired in 1994, after 26 years of service with the North Carolina Department of Environment, Health, and Natural Resources in the microbiology tuberculosis testing unit. There she received the Distinguished Service Award and The Order of the Long Leaf Pine for her diligence in testing for tuberculosis.

In retirement she enjoyed continuing her church work, visiting her friends and neighbors and caring for her flower beds.

The family would like to thank the members of Triangle Baptist Church, Fellowship Baptist church and friends for the acts of kindness shown over the years to Barbara; kindnesses shown through calls, visits, cards, gifts, and most of all prayers. Also, words cannot express our gratitude for the kindness, care and respect shown by Transitions Healthcare to her in her last days.
