Barry Hamilton Nation

Garner - Barry Hamilton Nation, aged 66, died Friday morning, May 2, in his home in Garner. Barry was born September 12, 1947 in Owensboro, Kentucky, the only child of Murray Hamilton Nation and Ann Bennett. He grew up in south Florida, where he met and eventually married Charmaine Albers. The newly married Nations left Florida in 1970 for Cullowhee, North Carolina, where Barry was finishing a graduate degree at Western Carolina University. They remained in North Carolina for the rest of their lives, eventually settling in Raleigh, where their three children grew up. Though Barry lost his wife Cherrie to ovarian cancer in 2004, he was lucky enough to find love a second time, and was married in 2012 to Susan McCreary. Over the course of his life, Barry was - among so many other things - a son, a friend, a student, a teacher, a teammate, a golfer, a gambler, a traveling salesman, a Mangosteen enthusiast, a dog lover, a soccer coach, a business owner, a movie watcher, a husband, and a father. He was loved, and he will be missed. Barry is survived by his three children, Ashley, Dani, and Robert Hamilton Nation, by his wife Susan, and by his very devoted dog, Sunshine. The family will see visitors Tuesday evening from six to eight o’clock at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner. A memorial service will be held at Hayes Barton Baptist Church in the Five Points neighborhood of Raleigh on Wednesday, May 7, at two o’clock. Although flowers are welcome, funding for ovarian cancer research was a cause very near to Barrys heart.
