Family and friends mourn the loss of Barry Walton Elkin, 74, who passed away at his home on Lake Gaston in Littleton, North Carolina on September 16th, 2022. He is preceded in death by his father, John “Jack” Morton Elkin, and his mother, Willie Walton Elkin. He is survived by his two older brothers, John Morton Elkin Jr., and William Keith Elkin. He is survived by his loving wife, Lane Mordecai Welles Elkin. Though many fondly think of Barry as Mr. Fix It, he will most be remembered for his boundless love. This love led to the blending of several families. As a result, Barry proudly boasted about his seven children: Gail Grimm, Karen (Josiah) Reed, Mary (Ben) Siegrist, Diana (Ron) Eastep, Danielle (Ira) Hance, Carl (Rachael) Hammond, and Amanda (Bud) Wright. He is survived in death by 18 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren and preceded in death by one granddaughter, Felicia Siegrist.
Barry served as a member of the United State Marine Corps Reserves and was honorably discharged after six years of service. He continued his aptitude in technology and engineering that he learned from his father and the Marine Corps through a series of jobs from airplane to radio repair. In 1978, Barry founded Computer Terminal Service. He was a successful business and family man. Barry ended his career in technology as a Network Engineer at AceComm Corporation in Gaithersburg, Maryland before retiring to the lake.
Barry’s adventurous, childlike spirit was infectious and made him a favorite of the grandchildren.
Barry and Lane found each other later in life, but they spent 24 years making each other’s dreams come true. Lane was reunited with her childhood land and they lived their days on the lake enjoying the beauty of nature and a few jet ski rides. Barry obtained his dream of a Tesla and driving it cross country. That trip bonded the two.
Barry was accepting of all and did not care for any barriers to love. He cared for the environment and wanted us all to live more kindly and sustainably. Lane and Barry were involved with the Center for Energy Education in North Carolina. They encouraged the use of electric vehicles and sustainable energy. The two were honored by the Center for their service. His burial will be a green burial giving his body back to the earth. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Trevor Project to support LGBTQ+ youth.
A service will be held on Tuesday, September 20th at 11 in the morning at the Bryan-Lee Funeral Home on Wake Forest Road in Raleigh, North Carolina. Family and friends are invited to stay for a reception celebrating Barry’s life. Family and invited guests will then attend a private graveside service at Mordecai Meadows in the Historic Oakwood Cemetery.
