Benjamin Franklin (B.F.) Byrd, Jr, 79, died peacefully Aug. 30, 2015 at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC. He had a career span over 50 years in the restaurant and hospitality industry. This began when his father opened Byrd’s drive-in restaurant on the South side of Raleigh in 1950. In the early 1970’s, Mr. Byrd purchased the Tastee Freeze in Clayton, NC from his close cousin Wimpy Byrd. In the 1980’s it became known as the Dairy King to local patrons who regularly visited the establishment and hungry families returning from the NC coast. He was a kind, generous and loving person who cared deeply about his employees, friends and family. He will be truly missed by all those who knew him. He was born in Angier, NC on May 10, 1936 to Benjamin Franklin Byrd, Sr. and Ethel Irene Sexton Byrd who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda Grice Byrd, his daughter Amanda Byrd Howell, her husband John, and their two children Hunter and Haley of Clayton, his son Patrick Byrd and his wife Michelle of Garner and his two brothers Zack and Tyrone Byrd. Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield.
