RALEIGH – Betty C. Smith, 97, passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2022.
She was born in Erie County, New York on September 5, 1925, to the late Howard and Florence Carl. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Alden Ernest Smith; sisters, Kathleen “Binkie” Carl, Margaret Carl, and Verna Carl; and by her brothers, Robert Carl and Donald Carl.
She is survived by her daughter, Wendy Marsich and husband, Michael Marsich; sons, David Smith and wife, Laura Long, Jeffrey Smith; grandchildren, Mikayla Marsich, Beatrice Schuster-Smith, and Abigail Juda and husband, William Juda; 2 great-grandsons, Alden and Felix Juda; and her good friend, Delphine Upperman.
Betty married Alden Smith shortly after World War II and moved to live in Lockport, NY for the next fifty plus years. She spent decades working as a geriatric nurse for Niagara County and was an active member of the Plymouth Congregational UCC church in Lockport. She also was an avid reader and (along with her husband Alden) an active hiker, bird watcher and naturalist in western New York. Betty spent the final years of her life living with her daughter in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she touched the lives of many others.
The family will hold a private burial at a later date in Cold Springs Cemetery in Lockport, New York. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice - Transitions LifeCare (www.transitionslifecare.org/donate/) or The National Audubon Society (www.audubon.org/donate).
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Transitions LifeCare Hospice for all the love and care they’ve shown to Betty during her illness.
