Billie Lou Dunn Godwin

December 30, 1938 — February 27, 2021

Billie Lou Dunn Godwin passed away on February 27, 2021, having gracefully persevered with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) for three years. Born on December 30, 1938, Billie was the daughter of William Wilder Dunn and Daisy Harper Dunn of Raleigh, NC. She lived in the Wilder’s Grove/New Hope area of Raleigh her entire life. Billie is preceded in death by her husband, Ben F. Godwin, her parents, and her beloved brother, William Rufus Dunn. One of four children, Billie graduated from Millbrook High School and attended what is now Campbell University. After nursing school, Billie worked for the late Dr. John Farmer for almost 30 years. Billie made countless friends while working at Dr. Farmer’s dermatology practice, and she maintained many of those relationships until her death. Much like her father, Billie was sociable, outgoing, and friendly; she never met a stranger and made friends easily, which was one of her most endearing and admired qualities. Even as her health declined, Billie was always excited for visitors and eager to connect with old friends. Billie and her late husband owned a home in Atlantic Beach, NC, and spending time at their beach retreat was among their favorite pastimes. There, Billie and Ben hosted family gatherings, socialized with neighbors, and spent countless hours together on the front porch. As the family grew to include in-laws and grandchildren, it was no surprise that everyone loved spending summers together at the beach. Billie is survived by two sisters, Maureen Pender of Raleigh, NC, and Nell Critcher (Dan) of Rolesville, NC. She is also survived by Ben’s three children whom she loved as her own: Jean Stewart (Bill) of Greensboro, NC; Nancy Gargis (James) of Newton, NC; and Al Godwin (Karen) of Birmingham, AL. In addition, Billie leaves behind two dear cousins, Pat Dunn of Greenville, NC, and Donna Crosby of Creedmoor, NC, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. The family would like to express love and appreciation to Dr. Corey Musselman and Dr. Elizabeth Campbell for their attentive and compassionate care over the past three years. Billie’s final years were greatly enhanced by their tireless efforts. A funeral service honoring Billie’s life will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at New Hope Baptist Church. Social distancing will be observed, and face coverings would be appreciated. A private burial will be held at Oakwood Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent to New Hope Baptist Church, 4301 Louisburg Road, Raleigh, NC 27604. A service of Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Raleigh.
