Bobbie Bates Underwood

Bobbie Bates Underwood, 90, passed away in the early morning hours of October 3, 2023,

after a short illness.

Bobbie grew up in Smithfield in Johnston County with his parents and 5 brothers. He joined the

Navy right after graduating from high school and was stationed in Norfolk as an airplane

mechanic. He married the love of his life, Joyce Stevens from Johnston County, and they just

celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. They came to Raleigh in 1956 and he began a 36

year career with Westinghouse Electric Corporation.

Bobbie is remembered by those who knew him for his kindness, his quiet, and his humbleness.

He had huge love and concern for his family and friends. His greatest joy was taking special

care of his family. He was a man of faith and a huge influence to all around him. He truly was a

good man. He loved playing golf and played well into his 80’s. He had several special golfing

buddies and also played and traveled with the Westinghouse golf league. He loved to drive.

Sunday afternoon rides were a favorite memory of his family.

Bobbie is survived by his wife Joyce, his daughter Joan of Ramseur and Siler City, his

grandson Daniel of Clayton and his brother Norman of Winston Salem.

Bobby is preceded in death by his daughter Jenny, his parents Sarah and Lehman Underwood

and 4 brothers, Dewey, Donald, Scott and Joe.
