Carey Johnson Hunter

July 19, 1930 — April 28, 2018

Carey Johnson Hunter passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2018 with his beloved wife by his side.  He was born in Raleigh, N.C. on July 19, 1930.  He was the son of Rufus A. Hunter and Elizabeth Campbell Hunter.  Carey grew up in Raleigh attending Myrtle Underwood School in Hayes Barton and Hugh Morson High School where he graduated in 1948.  He attended UNC as a freshman but left to serve in the army during the Korean War.  After his army service overseas, he returned to Wake Forest University to finish his degree in Business. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. He graduated in the last class at the old campus in 1956. After graduation he went into the insurance business, briefly working with his father and then for another insurance company.  He realized selling was not for him since his college major had been Public Administration.  He accepted a position with the N.C. Department of Transportation in planning and research which he really enjoyed.  He retired after 30 years of service. In 1955, he married the love of his life, Anne Fleming Hunter.  They met through mutual friends they had known since high school.  They were married 62 years and she was his constant companion and loving caregiver for the 40 years he dealt with progressive multiple sclerosis. They had two children who fortunately lived near them. Carey was an avid sportsman who enjoyed all sports and played many of them very well.  All his life he cheered for his UNC teams and Wake Forest except when Wake played UNC.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially in N.C. In his early adulthood he was a member the Raleigh Jaycees and Lamplighters.  Later he enjoyed the Old Raleigh Boys and especially the Raleigh Sports Club which he attended every week. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church having joined when he was 12. Other than his home, which really was his sanctuary, he loved spending time at the beach with family and friends.  There he enjoyed swimming, body surfing, fishing and crabbing.   As long as he was physically able, he enjoyed taking care of his yard and tending to the needs of the birds.  Gardening was another pleasure. In later life he and Anne began to travel.  They took their first cruise for their 25th anniversary and enjoyed it so much they took 15 more to various places.  They went to Europe four times with Carey in a wheelchair and managed quite well. In addition to his wife, Anne, he leaves his two children, Elizabeth H. Amos and husband Hal, Carey J. Hunter, Jr. and wife, Janey, and four grandchildren, John, Katie, Sarah Paige, and Logan Hunter to cherish his memory.  He is also survived by two brothers, Rufus A. Hunter and William C. Hunter. The family wishes to thank the team of caregivers that helped take care of Carey over the years.  They are: Debra Privette, Mary Kamotho, Naomi Mugo, Stella Mukamy, Jane Wachira, Monica Mwangi, and Bernadette Tucker.  They became like family whose care and compassion was immeasurable. The family would also like to thank special friend, Bob Doster, for his companionship through the years. A service will be held at First Baptist Church, 99 N. Salisbury St., at 11:00 am on Friday, May 4, with a reception at the church following the service.  Burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 3101 Industrial Dr., Suite 201, Raleigh, NC 27609, First Baptist Church, 99 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh N.C. 27603 or to the charity of one’s choice.
