Garner - Carlene Welch Stevens age 60, died on March 30, 2014 after battling brain cancer for more than three years with unbelievable grace and courage. She was born in Siler City, NC to the late Carl and Pearl Welch, graduated from Chatham Central High School and Central Carolina Community College. Carlene worked as a Deputy Sheriff with the Chatham County Sheriffs Office before making her home in Garner in 1983. She was employed by the Wake County Public School System and later worked for Satterwhite Construction Company in Knightdale. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Jimmy Stevens, her daughter, Carla Norris (Brandon), grandson, Tyler Norris, sisters Diane Lee (Garry), Patricia Hart (Bill) all of Garner. Also, a sister, Nanci Evans (Ron), of Siler City and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and brothers and sisters-in-law. In additional to her parents, Carlene was preceded in death by her sisters, Carol Tootsie Perry, and Judy Preslar. Carlene was a compassionate person, serving as a Hospice volunteer for several years, past president of the JC Ford Sunday School Class, and on a number of committees at Aversboro Road Baptist Church. Carlene was a great friend, an unbelievable mother and grandmother, and a loving wife. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Robin Koeleveld, Dr. Alan Kritz, Jessica Casselberry, Stacey Beard, and Hospice of Wake County for the amazing care and treatment they provided. Funeral Services will be conducted by Dr. Harvey Whaley at the Aversboro Road Baptist Church on Tuesday April 1 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday March 31 from 6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh NC 27607, or the JC Ford Fellowship Class c/o Aversboro Road Baptist Church 1600 Aversboro Rd. Garner, NC 27529.
