Garner - Carlisle Franklin Meredith (Carl), age 71, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on May 7, 2018. A resident of Wake County since 1997, Carl was born in Tennessee before spending most of his life in Northern Virginia. Carl’s first love was cars, and he spent his teen years learning how to take them apart and reassemble them. Every car he owned had personality, and every one was large enough to fit his 6’6” frame. In his retirement, he wrote self-published memoirs of his love of cars called The Rise and Fall of the Automan Empire and The Driver’s Other Handbook: What to Do When Reality Strikes. In the mid-1960s, he applied his mathematical mind and mechanical gifts to the budding world of computer programming. Carl was an early Computer Science major at East Tennessee State University, later receiving a Master’s from American University. He was a programming language pioneer and never met a computer part he couldn’t use for some purpose. He moved to Wake County to work for SAS Institute, from which he retired in 2006. When not rattling away on a keyboard, Carl enjoyed several other hobbies. He greatly enjoyed photography and was known to travel with two or more cameras around his neck. He was a great lover of Star Trek, backyard farming, and power tools of all sizes. He loved being a dog owner and will be greatly missed by his furry friends. Carl is survived by his wife of 31 years, Terry Meredith, his daughters Stephanie Clark and Katie Meredith, their spouses Tom Clark and Adam Cummins, grandchildren Charlotte, Eliza, Sara, Janey, Tommy, Dashiell, and Beckett, and two dogs, Dot the redneck terrier and Fred the tunneling beagle. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary Mother of the Church Catholic Parish, Garner. Burial will take place on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Fairfax Memorial Park, Fairfax, VA.
