CARY - Carolyn S. Cheek passed away peacefully at Glenaire on Saturday, February 8, 2025. Carolyn was born September 3, 1940, in Four Oaks, NC to the late Roby M. Stanley and Wilma Stewart Stanley.
Carolyn graduated from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in 1961 and began work as an elementary school teacher in Smithfield, NC. She later moved to Garner and began teaching at Fred A. Smith Elementary (now Smith Magnet Elementary) where she stayed for more than 20 years.
Carolyn met Leon Cheek through her participation in the choir at First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh. In 1979, they were married and spent 37 years together until his death in 2016.
The family cherishes many happy memories from the time spent together at Atlantic Beach and near Boone. Carolyn was an excellent cook, gifted vocalist and enjoyed sewing and needlecraft.
Carolyn is survived by her stepson, Kevin, and a multitude of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon; and sisters, Thelma Stanley and Dorothy McGoogan.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, February 14th at First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh, officiated by Pastor Laurie Weicher. A reception will be held immediately following the service. A private inurnment will be held at the columbarium of First Presbyterian Church.
A remembrance will also be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, February 17th at Glenaire in the Town Center Space, Cary.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Music Fund, Friendship Fund or General Fund of First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh; to Glenaire; or to a charity of choice.
