GARNER- Carolyn Floyd Green, 87, formerly a resident of Fairmont, Elizabethtown, Kinston, and Garner, died Wednesday, October 18, 2017 in Winston-Salem. The third of five children of Memory and Mary Floyd, Carolyn was born February 27, 1930, into a farming family in Fairmont, NC. She graduated from Fairmont High School in 1948, and then attended Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone, graduating with a degree in Home Economics and receiving a teaching certificate. She took a job with the NC Cooperative Extension Service in Elizabethtown, where she worked with the 4H Club, teaching canning, sewing, and cooking classes. In Elizabethtown, Carolyn met Gilmer Green, Jr., who was working with the NC State Forest Service. They married in 1958 and lived in the Ranger’s Residence in the Bladen Lakes State Forest. Carolyn soon resigned from the 4H and stayed home to raise her family. Carolyn, Gilmer, and their children moved first to Kinston and then to Garner, where she lived from 1971 to 2017. They were members of Layden Memorial Methodist Church. Carolyn was also extensively involved in women’s organizations such as the Driftwood Homemaker’s Circle, which she helped to lead for more than 25 years. Carolyn loved handicrafts of all kinds. She was always working on craft projects, many of which became gifts to family members and others were sold to raise funds for charitable causes. An avid gardener to the end, she tended tomatoes in patio pots even as her health failed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilmer, and siblings Mariah Thompson, Beth Edge, Gaston Floyd, and Epsie Lewis. She is survived by two children, Elna Carolyn Green of Augusta, GA, and Glenn Green (Michelle Gordon) of Winston-Salem; and by two grandchildren, Eli Green Powelson of Berkeley, CA, and Noah Green Powelson of Olympia, WA. She will be mourned and missed by many family and friends. A Remembrance of Life will be held at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner, on Saturday, October 21 at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make contributions to UNC-TV, which brought Carolyn many years of enjoyment. http://www.unctv.org/support/
