WILLOW SPRING- Charles Davis Stephenson, 90, passed away Friday at Oak Hill Assisted Living Center in Angier. A native of Johnston County, he was the son of the late Irving Stephenson and Minnie Barefoot Stephenson. Charles was a faithful member of Fellowship Baptist Church for over 40 years where he served as a deacon and a trustee. He oversaw the re-building of the church after fire destroyed it in 1992. Charles served honorably in the US Army from 1946 until 1949 and always shared stories about how proud he was to serve his country during the post war occupation of Japan where he made staff sergeant. Following his time in the Army Charles returned to Wake County and married his wife, Mamie Revels Stephenson, to whom he was married for sixty-seven years until her passing in September of 2017. Charles began farming in Wake County where he took great pride in tending his farm. He also loved to grow vegetables in his garden. Growing up during the great depression instilled a strong work ethic in Charles that helped to form the legacy that he leaves behind for his family. Charles’s Christian example will always be remembered by his family and friends. Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 3:00 PM at Fellowship Baptist Church in Willow Spring. The burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30-3:00 PM prior to the service at the church. Surviving are his sons, Mackey Stephenson (Marcia), Ronnie Stephenson (Denise) and Kenneth Stephenson (Sandy) all of Willow Spring; sisters, Marie S. Byrd of Benson and Magalene S. Smith of Four Oaks; grandchildren, Shelley Clark (Jason), Brandi Sears (Neal), Katy Cox (Jesse), Traci Starr (Steven), Colt Stephenson, Ashlee Ickes (Corey) and Blake Stephenson; ten great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Mamie Revels Stephenson; sister, Nellie S. Coats and his brothers, Garland and Warren Stephenson. The family wants to extend a special thank you to the staff of Oak Hill Assisted Living Center for the tremendous care given to Charles. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fellowship Baptist Church of Willow Spring Missionary Fund in Charles’s memory.
