Charles Milligan

Garner- Charles will be remembered by those who knew him as a loving, devoted family man, a hard worker and a generous spirit who gave money, time and attention whenever a need arose. Never seeking recognition for his countless contributions, big and small, he made his community a better place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, 1:00 pm at St. Mary Mother of the Church Catholic Church, Garner. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Mary Ann Cerami; daughter, Charlotte Shaw and husband, Gregory; mother, Clara Rutledge; sister, Ramona Schubert and husband, Ed; grandchildren, Brendan and Braden Shaw. Charles and Mary Ann left their beloved Louisiana to make a better life for their family in North Carolina. Charles treasured his roots and had many stories to tell about his rich cultural heritage, and yet Garner became his adopted home. His business, Delta Electric, thrived through his hard work and savvy management. Over the years he could be called on for electrical expertise and advice, often donated his services, and was a willing mentor to youth who wanted to learn his trade. He was a people person who naturally fit into community life, an active and involved citizen who gave back to his adopted town. One example of his impact and his generosity will enrich lives in Garner for generations to come; Charles was a benefactor who responded generously when called on in the early stages of the restoration of Garners auditorium, now known as Garner Performing Arts Center. He followed local politics and elections and took part in the Shrimp & Grits group, a whos who of Garnerites active in local affairs who met occasionally over informal dinners. He was always ready to share his two-cents worth. A lifetime of faith sustained him. His friends saw this recently as he shared his beliefs through social media. Charles legacy is one of love and support for his fellow man; his influence will extend far beyond his time here.
