Claude Lee Byrd, Iii

January 22, 1947 — August 9, 2019

Lee Byrd of Raleigh passed away after a brief illness. His family formed a circle of love around him as he slipped peacefully away. He is preceded in death by his grandparents R.S and Lillian Vaughn, Maude and C.L Byrd Sr, his parents C.L Byrd Jr and Vernelle Vaughan Byrd Lucas, his stepfather Dr. George B. Lucas Sr, and his stepbrother, Dr. Glenn B. Lucas. Born in Raleigh, NC, he attended Broughton High School, Cardinal Gibbons High School, Campbell College, and N.C State University. The Wolfpack was his team! His love of sports cars began even before he got his driver’s license. A career in sales and real estate continued to the present. He was active in the Open Table United Methodist Church and volunteered with his wife Susan at the Wake County Men’s shelter. His favorite place was in front of the television on the sofa either at home or the condo in North Myrtle Beach. Lee was not just a good man, he was the best of men. He is survived by his wife Susan, Trubnick Byrd, son Scott Byrd, his siblings Woody Byrd (Susan), Candace Lucas Flanagan (Michael), Irvin Lucas (Jane), Guy Lucas, and George B. Lucas Jr; nephews Todd Byrd, Ryan Byrd, Jonathan Lucas, and Daniel Lucas; his nieces Minh L. McPherren, Megan Flanagan, Grace F. Smith, Shannon L. Ritter; his best friend, Jimmie Murray, his faithful companion “Doodle”, and his Bullitt Mustang. We wish he had told us where he left the keys. The family gives their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Gandee, Rosett, and the entire medical team at UNC Neurosciences ICU for their compassionate care.Lee will be laid to rest in a casket built by his brother-in-law Michael Flanagan. Visitation will be 6-8 pm Tuesday August 13, 2019 at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Raleigh. The funeral service will be at 11:00 am Wednesday August 14, 2019 at Open Table United Methodist Church with a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Open Table United Methodist Church at 824 N. Bloodworth Street, Raleigh NC 27604.
