Danna Roach Metz

Danna Covington Roach Metz, 68, of Raleigh passed away on July 12, 2014.A good, honest and loving friend too many, she adored gardening, cooking, bird watching, and absolutely treasured the North Carolina Coast. From the Outer Banks on down to Ocean Isle, she loved being barefoot in the sand where she would easily spend hours walking the beach, shell-seeking and watching the waves. When the weather turned cold, her thoughts were always of Christmas, hands down her favorite holiday, and she would wrap her friends and family in the warm glow and spirit of the season like no one else could.She graduated from Laurinburg High School in 1964 and Gastonia Nursing School in 1968. A professional registered nurse, her career spanned more than 40 years and included being a homemaker and small business owner. She retired as the Assistant Director of Nursing at Central Prison in Raleigh NC. During her tenure at Central, she worked diligently to initiate the prisons Hospice program and was one of the first HIV outreach nurses on staff. A loving mother, she is survived by her three sons: Dan Metz of Chapel Hill NC, his wife Winifred and their daughter Aviva; Chris Metz of Raleigh NC and his daughter Kyrie; and Mac Metz of Star NC. She is also survived by her sister Sarah Kurtz of Lovettsville VA, niece Jennifer and nephew Quinn.She was preceded in death by her parents Sarah and Dan Roach.A lifelong caregiver who gave comfort and aid to countless people, her example of love, compassion and generosity will be carried on through those privileged to cherish the grace of her influence. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 17th at 1pm at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Road. Family will receive friends there immediately after the service.
