David Surles Evans, born on March 12, 1929, passed away on his 88th birthday, March 12, 2017. He devoted his entire life to his family, his friends, and his faith. He was considered a blessing to all who came to know him. Born and raised on a farm in Clayton NC, he had 10 siblings who have kept a strong relationship throughout their lives. As a young man, he worked at the NC State Dairy, and later at Dorothea Dix Hospital where he met an aspiring registered nurse who became his wife of 46 years. He was co-owner of The Esquire Barbershop in Raleigh. Years later, he joined the NC Correctional system, as a barbering instructor and took great joy in the rehabilitation and future success of those he mentored. David was always such a strong man in so many ways and his family learned to rely on that strength. He will forever be remembered as a man who was kind, generous, and always put others before himself. He truly understood the value of life and why were all really here. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Burial with military honors will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh. He is survived by his two daughters, Teresa Evans Parker and husband, Ivan and Lesa Evans; three grandchildren, Ryan Parker and wife, Sandy, Joshua Parker and wife, Chelsie and Erin Doak, along with two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Ellie Parker; sisters, Emma Pittman, Eley Watkins, Jean Popa, and brother, Robert Johnson; his nieces and nephews, who were an important part of his life, as well as his close friend, Edna Sykes. David was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothea Terry Evans; his brothers, Baucom, Milton, Bill, Howard, Wilbert, and sister, Elgie Evans. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Wednesday at the funeral home.
