David W. Stewart

RALEIGH – David W. Stewart, 98, passed away in the early morning hours of Friday, December 23, 2022.

He was born in Harnett County on May 27, 1924, the son of the late Alton and Reva Jones Stewart. Dave Stewart was the sole proprietor of Kirby Distributing Company in Raleigh. He ran a successful business for 68 years. He was the son of a pioneer aviator, Alton Stewart, who was the first licensed civilian pilot of North Carolina. Dave was married to Corrine Stewart for 57 years. He was an avid gardener, took in many a stray cat, and enjoyed weekends at his Emerald Isle retreat.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation and gratefulness for Dorothy, Editha, Yolanda, Ami, Amie, and Alice, who cared for him at his home.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Corrine O’Bryan Stewart; grandson, Will Poole; sister, Jean Glenn; and his brother, Harold Stewart.

David is survived by his daughter, Marian Stewart Poole and husband, Haywood of Raleigh; son, David Stewart, Jr. and wife, Jan of Raleigh; grandsons, Stewart Poole, Sam Stewart, and Charles Stewart; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, in the Mausoleum at Raleigh Memorial Park, with the interment immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in David’s memory to Forest Hills Baptist Church: 201 Dixie Trail, Raleigh, NC 27607.
