David William Hash

January 3, 1943 — July 10, 2021

David William Hash, 78, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, July 10th, 2021. Dave was born on January 3rd, 1943 in Paris, IL. He was the second of seven children born to Joseph and Lucille Hash. Growing up he attended a small country community school where he was in FFA and 4-H, was photographer of the yearbook, storekeeper, and a bus driver. He played basketball and was voted ‘biggest flirt’ and ‘wittiest’ his senior year. After graduation, he met a lifelong friend, Bob Carr, when joining the Air Force at the age of 17. He served four years of active duty, followed by two years in the reserves during the Vietnam War. He then worked for IBM in a variety of roles for 37 years. He started in machine repair, held multiple managerial positions, and finished his time in customer service management until his retirement in 2001. Dave met his loving wife Linda on Columbus Day 1981. They were married May 19th, 1984 and had three beautiful children. They enjoyed going to the Outer Banks and often flew there in Dave’s plane. They enjoyed spending time together traveling, skiing, reading, and raising their children. Dave also designed and built their beautiful log home. During his years at IBM, Dave saved up his vacation days so he could take his family on memorable, month-long trips across the United States. Traveling in a motorhome, Dave navigated across the country with paper maps, going to National and State Parks, two space shuttle launches, and 46 states over the course of their trips. Dave became a pilot in 1969 and enjoyed giving plane rides to friends and family. He was a member of the Kennebec Flying Club, where he kept his vintage, personally restored 1946 Cessna 120. He would regularly take his children with him to fly-ins like Oshkosh and Sun ’n Fun. He was involved in amateur rocketry with his son, often traveling across the country to attend large national launches. He also was a longtime volunteer with Astronomy Days at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. During his retirement he built custom cabinets and volunteered his time doing a variety of projects at Raleigh Charter High School. When his children became involved with Science Olympiad he quickly became a coveted parent volunteer for the teams at East Garner Middle School, Carnage Middle School and Raleigh Charter High School. He helped students with building events and accompanied the teams to countless local, state, and national competitions. He continued to help the Carnage and Raleigh Charter Science Olympiad teams long after his own children graduated. Dave was actively involved as a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Garner. He served on the church council as President and Finance Secretary, as well as several church committees. As a member of the Men’s Group he especially enjoyed his time volunteering at Camp Agape for rocketry camp and many other projects. He was exceptionally humble and always eager to help others, and could often be found driving people to doctor appointments, doing church maintenance, and performing countless other unacknowledged acts of service. He never complained once throughout treatment of metastatic esophageal cancer and previous bouts with other forms of cancer. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, working on airplanes and classic cars, and reading. He was also a master craftsman, and could often be found working on projects in his workshop or tractor shed. His family and friends will remember him best for his endless patience, generosity, witty jokes, great advice, absolute positivity, and brilliance. Dave is survived by his wife, Linda Barlow Hash, his children, Lisa Burnett (Steven), Leslie Jarrett (David), and David Hash, and his grandchildren, Phillip and Laurel Burnett, and Charlotte and Henry Jarrett. He is also survived by his siblings Larry Hash (Veronica), Mike Hash (Barbara), Robert Hash (Rosanna), Cindy Whitley (Leon) and Beth Lennon (Alan), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Lucille Hash, as well as his youngest brother, Jeff Hash (Nancy). A memorial service will be held at Lord of Life Lutheran Church on Sunday, July 18th at 1pm.
