Diane Woerner Mitchell

February 20, 1943 — September 10, 2022

Diane Woerner Mitchell, 79, of Garner died Sept. 10, 2022 in Fuquay Varina. She was born on Feb. 20, 1943 and was the daughter of the late Howard F. Witmer and Angeline Fischer Witmer.

Diane was retired as a nurse at Wake Medical Center and Garner Family Practice. She particularly enjoyed working with children in the pediatric clinic at Wake Medical Center. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Garner where she volunteered in many positions.


Diane was a nature lover and recycled thousands of cans, bottles and other products in an effort to protect the environment. She was particularly proud of her work with maintaining bluebird houses at the Lake Benson Park in Garner.


Diane loved to travel and visited many places. She particularly enjoyed road trips with her husband Bill and multiple trips to Hawaii.


Diane is survived by her husband, Bill, of the home, three sons, Ric Woerner, and his wife Mary, of Madison Heights Va., Tom Woerner, of Angier and Andy Woerner, his wife Angela, of Fuquay-Varina. She is also survived by step children Eileen Rabil, and her husband Don, Julie Vorobiov and husband Michael, Cathay Egan and husband Michael, son Billy and his wife Wendy and daughter in law Kristi Abare Woerner of Fuquay-Varina.


She was most proud of five grandchildren, Beth Woerner, Steven Woerner and wife Abby, Grayer Woerner, Rachael Pleasant and husband Britt and Nicole Grinnell and husband Chris who affectionately called her Grandmom, Gran and Grandma Diane.


She had four great grandchildren and 10 step grandchildren. She proudly attended many ball games, Jiu Jitsu matches, swim meets, graduations and soccer matches. She also loved sharing her love of waterfalls, blue birds and other aspects of nature with her grandchildren.


She is also survived by a brother, Frank Witmer, of Millersville Pa., and multiple cousins and other family members.


Services for Diane will be held Friday, September. 16 at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Garner. Family will greet friends shortly before the service from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m.


In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Ocean Conservancy or the charity of one’s choice.
