Donald Barry Moore

June 11, 1947 — August 20, 2018

CLAYTON – Donald Barry Moore, 71 of Clayton passed away peacefully at his home on August 20, 2018, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He is now resting in the arms of his Lord and Savior. Funeral services will be 2:30 pm Sunday at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Don was the first child born to Lucy Liles Moore and Lewis Arch Moore Jr. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and his brother Sam Moore. Don graduated from Garner High School in 1965 and from Campbell University in 1969. He worked for the N.C. Department of Transportation for over 38 years. He later served as the treasurer of the Southeastern Transportation Geotechnical Engineering Organization for many years. Don has been married to his high school sweetheart and love of his life Elaine Ryals Moore, for nearly 52 years. Don and Elaine would often tease each other about, “who started all of this.” After they retired, they spent many joyous years at Atlantic Beach boating and fishing with their children and grandchildren. He is also survived by his daughter Lynn Rowland (Jeffrey), son Richard Moore (Monika) and his sister Emily Hill. Don and Elaine have eight grandchildren and one great -grandchild. They have many wonderful memories with their Papa. They often referred to him as the man, the myth, and the legend. Don was a lifelong member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where he served in many ways. He was a deacon, and was a huge mentor and friend to those he served. He spent many years playing on and coaching the men’s softball team. He was a member of the church choir and loved singing for the Lord. His wisdom, advice, life lessons (which often came in the form of riddles that you would not understand until later) and love will forever be in the hearts and minds of those whom he loved. The family would like to acknowledge the outstanding treatment, and compassionate care provided to Don during his cancer journey; Dr. Jeffrey Crane, Dr. Rommel Lu, Dr. Mark Jalkut, Susan Hicks, RN, and the entire amazing teams at UNC REX Cancer Care of East Raleigh and Heartland Hospice. Most of all we would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all of the prayer warriors who have been faithful over these years. In lieu of flowers, Don’s family would ask you to make a donation to your favorite charity or spend some time serving others, like taking a senior to lunch. Arrangements by Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.
