Doris Hope Winship

Doris Hope Lupo Winship, 79, of Raleigh, NC went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.  She was born December 29, 1935 in Wade, NC to the late Martin Harvey Lupo and Ara Agnes Strickland.  She grew up in rural Wade, NC and was a graduate of Central High School in Cumberland County in 1954.  She then attended the Medical University of South Carolina earning a Nursing degree.  Practiced nursing several years and met her husband, the late Edwin Carroll Winship from Portland, Maine who was stationed at Fort Bragg at that time.   They were married November 28, 1958 in Charleston, SC.  They had one daughter Carol Ann born July 31, 1968.  Lt. Colonel Edwin C. Winship retired from the Army  in 1977 to Charleston, SC where Doris lived until 2002.  She then moved to Raleigh, NC to be near her daughter and grandchildren and she lived there until her death. Doris Winship is survived by her daughter, Carol Ann Winship Thompson and husband David and 3 grandchildren, Jonathan David, Stephen Paul, and Katherine Ann of Frisco, TX; an aunt, Vivian Schaler of Raleigh, NC; two sisters Ruth Mary Matthews and Byrd Jernigan of Wade, NC; and her beloved dogs, Zach and Pepper. Services will be held April 2, 2015 at 11am at Bryan Lee Funeral Home Chapel, 831 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh, NC 27604.  Family will receive friends beginning at 10am. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the SPCA of Wake County.   Burial service will be held at the Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, SC on Friday at 1pm.
