Dorothy Lowden Zager

Dorothy Lowden Zager, 93, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2020 at Stoneridge Retirement Living in Cary, North Carolina. On April 10, 2020 she was hospitalized for acute pulmonary edema and advanced congestive heart failure. After four weeks of rehabilitation at Hillcrest Raleigh she was well enough to move back to her private apartment where she enjoyed gardening around her patio and watching the birds at her feeders. Dorothy was born in Toronto, Canada and relocated to the United States in 1986. She spent 40 years working in the dental field which included private practice and for the City of Toronto teaching dental health to children in high risk areas. In the early 1980s Dorothy was the Executive Director at Hope Shelter in Mineral Wells, Texas, a family violence shelter for women and children. She was instrumental in securing government funding and as a result of her focused work the shelter is still active today. As a retiree Dorothy volunteered at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Patricia Wilcox and son-in-law, William Ross, daughter Dena Doyle and son-in-law, Martin Doyle and her grand-daughter Alaina Doyle. Her parents Robert Lowden and Eva McNaughton, sisters Jean Acri and Edna OBrien predeceased her. Dorothy wanted a natural burial which will be held at Historic Oakwood Cemetery on Monday, June 1, 2020 at 1pm.
