Douglas Scales Chamblee

Douglas Scales Chamblee, age 96, died the morning of October 12th, 2017. He was born January 4, 1921 in Zebulon, North Carolina, son of Cleveland S. and Cassie Horton Chamblee. He earned B.S and M.S. degrees in Agronomy from NC State University and a Ph.D. from Iowa State University. He was elected Fellow in the American Society of Agronomy and served as President of the Southern section. He retired from NC State University after 48 years. Douglas was a loving husband, great dad, caring grandfather, and dedicated friend. Douglas was an active charter member of Highland United Methodist Church since 1954. He worked in Peru for three years during the early 60’s at the University of Lima and returned multiple times for over 10 years. Douglas loved to dance and work in the yard and garden. He was predeceased by his wife, Edythe Brooks Chamblee, his son, Gary Douglas Chamblee, his sister, Oleta Chamblee Smith, and his brother, Graham V. Chamblee. Surviving are his daughters, Gale Chamblee of Greensboro, Marie Chamblee of Durham, daughter-in-law, Catherine Verdone of Charlotte; and granddaughters, Abigail Chamblee of Charlotte, and Katie Chamblee Ryan and her husband Arthur Ryan of Washington, DC. The family would like to thank the many nurses and staff members of the Stewart Health Center at Springmoor for the care they provided Dr. Chamblee over the past five years. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Thursday, October 19th, 2017 at Highland United Methodist Church in Raleigh. The family will receive friends and relatives immediately following the service. The burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park, Glenwood Avenue. Funeral arrangements are being made by Bryan Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Rd, Raleigh, NC 27604. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, 1001 Blair Drive, Raleigh, NC 27603.
