Douglas Valton Hinton

August 2, 1939 — December 18, 2023

Douglas Valton Hinton, 84, of Garner passed into eternal glory on Monday, December 18th following a period of declining health. He is now with his Heavenly Father in whom he has faithfully loved and served.

Doug was born in Emit, NC (Johnston County) to the late Mallie V. Hinton and Alice B. Hinton and attended Corinth Holders School and Garner Senior High School where he graduated. Joining the United States Navy in 1957, Doug served his country honorably for over six years. Following discharge, Doug joined the ranks of the Raleigh Police Department where he continued to serve. He soon obtained the rank of Sergeant, commanded the Raleigh Police Academy for many years, and obtained expertise in traffic enforcement, motorcycle patrol operations, firearms, and investigative procedures. Doug also was proficient in Defensive Tactics and, throughout his career, used his abilities to begin and operate Karate schools and training facilities in the Raleigh area. A certified Karate instructor, Doug obtained the rank of Black Belt in several Karate disciplines and enjoyed seeing others succeed in their fitness and self-defense endeavors.

Retiring in 1988, Doug then answered his ultimate call for spiritual service as he began to journey to numerous foreign mission fields to spread the message of God’s ultimate love and hope through Jesus Christ. Doug attended, organized, and spearheaded seemingly countless efforts to spread the gospel message around the world through foreign medical mission trips, construction, and church planting operations. He served for many years with the CERT Organization (Christian Emergency Relief Team) and enjoyed seeing a countless number of precious souls accept Christ, enjoy new life, and receive the promise of a blessed eternity through Him.

Doug was also a faithful member of Mid-Way Baptist Church (Raleigh) for over 50 years and served as an Usher, Sunday School Teacher, Church Deacon, and in other roles for many years. Even as his health began to decline, Doug remained faithful in serving others through food preparation and distribution and in always sharing the Gospel message.

Doug is survived by his precious and loving wife, Ann, of the home and with whom their love story is a continuing model of marriage that should be emulated by all; son, Kevin D. Hinton and wife, Jennifer, of Willow Spring; daughter Judy Diedrich and husband, Carl, of Bloomington, MN; daughter, Lydia Saunders of Faribault, MN; daughter Brenda Wall of Garner; daughter Kristy Griffin and husband, Dale, of Newport, NC; and son, Anthony McLeod and wife, Carol, of Willow Spring; brother Clark Hinton and wife, Mavis of Macon, Ga. Doug also loved and enjoyed a host of loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought so much joy to him and to whom was taught a wealth of life-lessons.

In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his sister Alicia Batton.
