Edna Lawhon Sykes, age 92, of Raleigh, NC died on November 3, 2024. She was born on February 3, 1932, in Johnston County, NC to the late Alex Aaron Lawhon and Bertha Hughes Lawhon.
She completed high school then attended Hardbarger Business College and later took several courses at Wake Tech Community College. She began work with NC State Government at Dorothea Dix Hospital (1954-1967), NC Division of Health Services (1967-1987). After retirement, began working as a temporary legislative assistant/floater with NC General Assembly from 1989-2012. She enjoyed cross stitch and quilting.
She is survived by her son, Donald Sykes (Karen); daughter, Debbie Holder (Frank); grandchildren, Craig Sykes, Eric Sykes, and Ehren Holder; great-grandchildren, Kierstin, Kelsey, Lydia, and Nora; sisters, Gladys Woodard (Bob), Carolyn Aycock (Elton), Shirley Proutey (Don), Doris Crews (Gene), and Brenda Stroud (Terry); brother, Frank Lawhon; 26 nieces and nephews; numerous great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Thomas Sykes; sisters, Elouise Griffin, Elizabeth Wall, and Connie Breci; brothers, Richard Lawhon, Robert Lawhon, and James Lawhon.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Thursday, November 7, 2024 at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 1200 Benson Road, Garner, NC 27529. A funeral service will be held at 10:00am on Friday, November 8, 2024 at 3414 N. Shiloh Road, Garner, NC 27529. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park, Clayton.
