After being blessed with 93 years of a wonderful life, Edwin Norman Quick, Sr. passed away peacefully and entered the presence of his Lord on Thursday, September 7, 2023 surrounded by his family who adored him. He was a caring son, a devoted brother, a loving husband, a doting daddy, and a very proud grandfather.
Ed was born on May 18, 1930, in Sampson County to Floyd and Eva Boone Quick. After his mother’s death at age four, his father re-married and Rosa Wynn and her two children expanded the family. Ed attended Clinton city schools and after graduation, he was drafted into the Army and proudly served our country in Korea. Following his military service, he returned home and decided to leave Sampson County and move to the big city of Raleigh. There he began dating Mildred Fann, also from Sampson County. They married in 1955 and moved from Raleigh to Garner where they raised their family and enjoyed living in a small town. Ed worked for the United States Postal Service for 31 years and was fortunate to retire at age 58. He always said, “retirement is the best job I’ve ever had.” His retirement “job” had many facets including: grooming his immaculate yard; tending to his summer garden where he was known for growing delicious tomatoes; sitting on his deck watching the birds; playing Solitaire while listening to gospel music; spending time in his workshop where he could be found tinkering, repairing, and building; constantly checking off the items on Mildred’s “honey-do” list; and being in a state of constant readiness to help his children and his grandson with their every need.
Ed accepted the Lord as his Savior at a young age and was baptized in a creek in Sampson County. He was a charter member of Aversboro Road Baptist Church and served the church in many capacities. There, he sat on the same pew, in the same spot for many years – rarely missing a Sunday morning worship service. He especially loved his Sunday School Class!
Ed was a long-time member of the Garner Lions Club where he honed his skills serving on the cook crew, had many years of perfect attendance, served as the President of the club, and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Award and the Lion of the Year.
Ed leaves to cherish his memory: the love of his life, his wife of 68 years Mildred; the pride of his life, his children Judith, Eddie and Eddie’s wife, Amy; the joy of his life, his “favorite” grandson Dylan and Dylan’s wife, Crystal; and his very special niece Angela Allen of Rocky Mount, as well as a host of extended family.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his infant son, his brothers Elbert, Earnest, Eugene, Elliot, and Earl, and his sisters Mary Ellen and Mildred Kathryn, along with many nieces and nephews.
