Elizabeth (Betsy) Gray, of Garner, NC died peacefully surrounded by her family on May 3, 2018. Betsy was born in Angier, NC, on November 17, 1930, and spent her early years there. She attended both Meredith College and East Carolina Teachers College from which she received her degree in 1953. She then worked as a primary school and kindergarten teacher at various schools in Wilmington, Fuquay-Varina, and Garner. After her marriage in 1957, Betsy raised her family in Garner where she was an active member in the First Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, member of the Women’s Missionary Union and weekly bible study groups. An avid bridge player, Betsy enjoyed playing and socializing in numerous bridge clubs. After her retirement from teaching, Betsy enjoyed taking courses in history and cultures at the McKimmon Center at North Carolina State University. She enjoyed spending time with her family and vacationing at their cottage on Ocracoke Island. Betsy was predeceased in 2007 by her husband of fifty years, John B. Gray and her sister Ruth Carroll. She is survived by her daughter, Carroll Gray-Preston (Andrew) of Morrisville and Anna Gray Stark (Greg) of Tarboro. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Garner at 11:00 am on Monday, May 7, 2018 with the Graveside interment immediately following at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4.00-6:00 pm at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner. Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church of Garner or the SPCA of Wake County.
