Elvin Thomas Williford, 87, died Friday at Wake Medical Center. He was born in Granville County, the son of the late Ira and Mary Mangum Williford. At the age of 19, he was an infantry soldier in Pattons 3rd Army during WWII and landed at the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service to our country. For many years, he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent at Catawba Springs Christian Church. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am Monday at Catawba Springs Christian Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Louise Matthews Williford; daughter, Diane W. Hales (Lynn); son, Larry T. Williford (Carol) all of Raleigh; sisters, Elizabeth Grimes (James) of Coats and Pauline Fulp of Greensboro; brothers, Hurley Williford (Billie) also of Greensboro and Ira (Jr.) Williford (Elsie) of Raleigh; grandchildren, Brad Williford (Fabiana), Jennifer Paddack (Brent), Lindsay Alt (Frankie), Daniel Edwards (Marsha), Jennifer Dwyer (Matt), Ashley Hales (Lorie) and Ryan Hales (Sandee) , as well as seven great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Brenda Edwards. The family will receive friends from 3-5:00 pm Sunday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.
