Elwood Lee Evans, 83, passed away peacefully on Friday. He was born in Princeton, NC to the late John Rayford Evans and Bertha Rowe Evans. Following the death of his birth mother, he was raised by his stepmother, Ruby Pierce Evans. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Sunday at First Baptist Church of Garner. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Clayton. Elwood grew up on a farm, and farmed for a few years after graduating from high school. He trained as an electrician and plumber and enjoyed a long career as an engineer with Carolina Power & Light. He was an active, longtime member of First Baptist Church of Garner where he taught Sunday School and served as a deacon. Elwood was also a Boy Scout leader for many years while raising two sons. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking. His wife of over 51 years, Ruby Thompson Evans preceded him in death, as did his brother, J.R. Evans. Survivors include his second wife of 11 years, Lucille Sauls Evans; his son, Anthony (Tony) Evans and wife, Kathy and granddaughters, Elizabeth and Rebecca; son, Gary Dennis Evans and wife, Dale; brother, Shelton Evans and wife, Peggy; 3 nieces and 3 nephews, as well as stepdaughters, Melanie E. Williams and husband, Jim and Nancy E. Clardy and husband, John and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00-8:00 PM at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner. Memorial contributions may be made to Liberty Hospice Services, 3200 Spring Forest Rd., Suite 201, Raleigh, NC 27616.
