Ethel Mae Shaw

Ethel Hill Shaw, 94, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2024, after a long period of declining health. Ethel was born in Guilford County, NC to the late, Guy B. Hill and Lola Mooney Hill. She graduated from High Point High School in 1948 and earned a nursing degree from High Point Memorial Hospital in 1951. Ethel served many as a private duty nurse during her career. She also worked at Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh, NC and retired in 1995 after 23 years of service.

Ethel was a faithful Christian member of Raleigh First Church of the Nazarene. Her love for music as a pianist was demonstrated for over 50 years of playing during worship services, for funerals and weddings. Many will remember how she played with such joy and ease and she attributed it to a gift from God. She also taught Sunday School many years and was Missionary President. She enjoyed bringing little gifts to various adults and children in the church.

Ethel was preceded in death in 2011 by her husband of 61 years, James Benjamin (JB) Shaw; her parents, Guy and Lola Hill; her brother and wife, Ed and Betty Hill.

Ethel is survived by her children, Lynn Shaw Legg and husband Rev. Tom Legg of Sparta, TN; Ann Shaw Coats and husband Van Coats of Fuquay-Varina, NC; Randy Shaw and wife Jenny of Garner, NC and Ted Shaw of Garner, NC.

Grandchildren, James (Kathe) Legg; Ben Legg; Nat (Stephanie) Coats and son, Rylan; Derek (Brooke) Shaw and girls, Heidi and Penny; Dillon (Jordan) Shaw and girls, McKenzie and Bridget; Jessica (Matt) Wrench and daughter, Samantha, Brittany (James) Phero and sons, Luke, George and Charlie, Madison (Justin) Cobb and daughters, Ruby and Lilly. Nieces and Nephews.

The family thanks the caregivers and staff at Emerald Health and Rehab in Lillington, NC for their kind and thoughtful care of our Mother for over 2 years and also, Gentiva for their care during this last week.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 2 at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 1200 Benson Road, Garner NC 27529. Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm to 1:00pm before the service at Bryan Lee Funeral Home of Garner.
