Evelyn Clement Wooten died quietly at home on Sunday, June 22, 2014.Evelyn was born on Jan. 12, 1923, the first child of the late Phillip Arthur Clement and Ella Carter Clement. She was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy C Burgess, and her three brothers Phillip A Clement II, William C Clement, and John M Clement. She was also preceded in death by her son, Herman Glenn Wooten. Evelyn was a lifelong resident of Wake County, growing up in Raleigh and living the past sixty three years in Garner. Evelyn was a graduate of Hugh Morson High School and was a member of the class of 1939, the first class to graduate from 12 years of instruction. She was 16 when she graduated. Following high school, Evelyn attended Peace College, graduating in 1941. She was the first member of her family to attend college. With the U.S. engaged in World War II, Evelyn went to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, freeing up a male to serve in the armed forces. During the war she worked six days a week for the government and then spent her evenings volunteering with the USO and the Salvation Army. She told of working a 9-hour day, then rushing home to change and ride a bus to Fort Bragg, or Camp Butner, or even Camp LeJeune for dances to support the troops. Evelyn married Herman S Wooten in 1949. They had four children, Mary Kay, Steven Michael, Herman Glenn, and Kenneth Lee. She was a charter member of the Garner Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving three terms as the Worthy Matron of the chapter as well as several offices in the chapter, and appointments of the North Carolina Grand Chapter of the Eastern Star. Evelyn returned to work in 1962 and worked from 1963 to 1988 for the U.S. Courts as a member of the U.S. Probation Office staff. Shortly following her retirement in 1988, Evelyn returned to work as a contract employee of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. She worked for the EPA until 2008. She was active in community activities her entire life. She was often helping at fundraisers or bake sales for a variety of groups. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am Thursday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00-11:00 am prior to the service. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park. Evelyn is survived by daughter, Mary Kay Wooten of Garner; son, Steven Michael Wooten and his wife, Tamara S Miller of Wilmington; her daughter in law, Shelia Wooten, of Clayton; and her son, Kenneth Lee Wooten, of Garner. Evelyn is also survived by her four grandchildren, Ashley Wooten, Michael Wooten and his wife, Jennifer, Joseph Wooten and his wife, Angie, and Jennifer Wooten. She is also survived by her eight great-grandchildren, Sarah, Logan, Kaylee, Bobby, Erica, Addison, Sassy, and Nora, plus several nieces and nephews.
