Evelyn Gargis Thompson

Raleigh - Evelyn Inez Gargis Thompson passed away peacefully on May 24, 2017 in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was born on March 15, 1921 on Dawson Street in Raleigh, the eldest child of the late Janie I. Holder Gargis and Joseph Norman Gargis. She was a retired employee of the Hudson- Belk Co. with more than forty-one years of service.  She was a superb cook known especially for her decadent chocolate cake and sumptuous brownies. Mrs. Thompson had a special gift and love for working with children and began teaching a childrens Sunday school class at Calvary Baptist Church in downtown Raleigh.  She was a charter member of Athens Drive Baptist Church where she continued teaching Sunday school, sang in the choir, served as chairperson of the Homecoming Committee and served on numerous other committees. She was predeceased in death by her husband of 63 years, Clyde David Thompson, in 2004; sisters, Elizabeth Mae Pruitt of Greenville, NC and Florence Ruth Weathers of Cary, NC; brothers, Joseph Norman Gargis, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA and Jack Dempsey Gargis of Greenville, NC. She is survived by her daughter, Gloria Thompson Rogers and husband, Bob Carlton Rogers of Tabor City, NC; granddaughter, Elizabeth Lynne Perry and husband, Kelly Logan Zimmerman of Spokane, WA and great granddaughter, Eva Rose Odom of Spokane, WA. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Athens Drive Baptist Church on Friday, May 26, 2017 at 2 pm.  Private entombment at the mausoleum in historic Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh, NC alongside her late husband will precede the service.  The family will receive friends at a reception in the church hall following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Meals on Wheels of Wake County, Post Office Box 37639, Raleigh, NC 27627; Athens Drive Baptist Church, 1601 Athens Drive, Raleigh, NC 27606 or a charity of your choice.
