Frances Eugenia "Gene" Sherwood

RALEIGH – Frances Eugenia “Gene” Sherwood, 81, passed away Monday, August 14, 2023.

She was born in Pitt County on November 6, 1941, the daughter of the late John M. Sherwood, II and the late Margaret Little Sherwood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John M. Sherwood, III.

Gene graduated from Cary High School, class of 1959, and went on to spend a year at Peace College in Raleigh. After college, Gene would go on to work in the License Plate Agency on New Bern Avenue in Raleigh, retiring from the NCDMV after 30+ years of dedicated service. She was also a faithful member of Crabtree Valley Baptist Church in Raleigh.

Gene is survived by her life partner of 22 years, Chris Bowman; and a host of friends from her church, Crabtree Valley Baptist Church.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, August 18, 2023, in the Mausoleum at Montlawn Memorial Park with Rev. Johnny Richards officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are strongly encouraged to be made to the Food Pantry Ministry at Crabtree Valley Baptist Church, 4408 Lead Mine Rd, Raleigh, NC 27612.
