Geneva Barefoot Massengill

RALEIGH - Geneva Mae Barefoot Ashman Massengill, 89, of Raleigh, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 25, 2021. She was born on January 30, 1931, in Harnett County. Geneva was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd A. Massengill, her parents Hector and Katie Stewart Barefoot, brothers, Ernest M. Barefoot, Sr., Martin “Buddy” Barefoot, Garland Barefoot, Eldridge “Boat” Barefoot, and sisters, Elizabeth Harrell and Lenora Sharp. Also preceding her in death were her son-in-law, Vernon Martin, and step-daughter, Linda Martin. Geneva is survived by her children, daughter Deborah Martin, son Danny Ashman (Vickie), grandchildren: April Ashman Piercy (Chris), Brian Ashman (Rachel), Michael Martin (Nicole), and Tammy Martin Thornton (Jason). There are 10 great-grandchildren left to cherish her memory as well: Austin, Noah and Caleb Martin, Avery Gracie Thornton, Jillian Kelsey Ashman and Nathan, Taylor Kara Piercy. She is also survived by a step-daughter, Janice Massengill Temple and family. Geneva worked for Westinghouse, ABB Elster for 51 years. She said she didn’t consider going to work but going to have fun with her co-workers. She retired in 2007, enjoying her time with her siblings and working in her yard. She loved having her family over and enjoyed cooking for them on Sundays. Mom would put others before herself, always wanting to make sure everyone else was taken care of and that we always had plenty.
