George Douglas Sewell, 77, of Oak Island, NC died February 14, 2018 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh surrounded by loved ones. He was born July 23, 1941 in Erwin, NC, son of the late Ernest Lee Sewell and Lena Rose Sewell. He began his lifelong service to the Church as an acolyte at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Erwin and was a dedicated Eagle Scout. George attended The Patterson School in Lenoir, NC and High Point University then went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Marine Corp. His years of service included tours of Europe, the Mediterranean and serving in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis and Bay of Pigs. He had the honor of being Marine of the Year in 1963. He founded Omega Association Management, Inc. in Cary, NC in 1997. He developed lifelong friendships during his many years as a business owner. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ernest Lee Sewell Jr. and wife Helen Bass Sewell, brother-in-law Jack Cox and first wife Glenda Brown Keels. He is survived by his daughters, Stacy Brown Sewell of Raleigh, Haffye Joann Sewell of Winston-Salem and Savanna Huffman Sewell of Cary, his granddaughters Caroline Sewell Lumpkin and Haffye Elizabeth Lumpkin of Raleigh, his sister Haffye Sewell Cox of Tarboro; his nieces and nephews Robert Cranmer Cox, Elaine Cox Johnston, Thomas Quick Cox, Elizabeth Rose Cox, Ernest Lee Sewell III and wife Martha Lassiter Sewell, Edward Scott Sewell, George Douglas Sewell II and wife Meredith Sparks Sewell. He is also survived by Marguerite Huffman Sewell of Cary, stepson Nathan Huffman, sisters in law Cyrena Burnside of Los Angeles, CA, Victoria Freedman and husband Steve Freedman of Cary, numerous nieces, nephews and close family friends. A memorial service will held at Christ Episcopal Church in Raleigh, NC on Thursday, February 22nd at Three o’ clock with The Reverend Callie E. Swanlund officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in George’s honor to Christ Episcopal Church, 120 E. Edenton St., Raleigh, NC 27601 and Southport-Oak Island Animal Rescue (SOAR), 3376 St. Charles Pl. SE, Southport, NC 28461.
